Part Three
In this four-part series, I am talking about unit studies. We are studying airplanes because we had the chance to ride in one as our finale. So let’s get to Day 2 of our Airplane Unit Study.
CrewTip: The Concept Behind My Crazy
When planning the “Experience It” portion of the unit study, I always try to incorporate as many of our five senses as I can. I figure that sight and hearing is a given so I always try to pick at least one more for a minimum of three senses used.

Day Two: Nate Saint
Learn It:
We looked up a couple of online articles about Nate Saint. We watched a video about the bucket drop which he invented so they could drop supplies safely to those who needed it.
Write It:
We brainstormed about what we learned about Nate Saint. Each kiddo stated one fact they had learned while I wrote them on the dry erase board. Then we worked together to combine the facts into sentences and put them in sequential order. I required them to write their own individual closing sentences after they had copied the board. Sam wrote his own short essay independently and we edited it together. They illustrated their writing project with an airplane doing a bucket drop.
Our oral dictation spelling words were remote, pilot, and missionary. I had Nikki write each beginning sound on her paper.
Experience It:
We watched 2 YouTube videos about the science behind how airplanes fly. For our hands-on activity, I created a paper airplane obstacle course with hula hoops, cups to be knocked over, and a fan to see how much lift they could get. They really got creative with their airplane folding in order to get the most distance and speed. They also enjoyed seeing how well their planes performed in the challenge.
