Unit Studies: Takeoff

by | Homeschool

Part Two

In part one of our four-part series about unit studies, I shared with you the basic map I use to write my unit studies. In this post, I would like to share with you my lesson plan for Day One of our Airplane Unit Study to demonstrate how to use the Unit Study Map.

CrewTip: The Concept Behind My Crazy

After I have chosen a topic, I like to look for a person and then we study that person and how they became a part of history within the chosen topic.

Day One: The Wright Brothers

Learn It:

We watched “The Who Was/Is” series on Netflix about the Wright Brothers.

Write It:

Next up, we wrote about what we learned by putting the facts about the Wright Brothers and their first flight together into sentences on our dry-erase board. Nikki and Georgie Lou colored an airplane coloring sheet during this time. Randa was required to put 3 of the sentences in order and write them with proper punctuation and capitalization. Bella, Alex, and Andy were required to put all five sentences in order and add 2 adjectives to them. Sam was required to dig deeper than what was on the board and write a short essay about the Wright Brothers. After that, we did spelling oral dictation using the words thrust, lift, flight, flew, and Wright Brothers. Nikki wrote the letters I dictated to her. They also illustrated their writing projects with a drawing of the Wright Brothers Airplane.

Experience It:

They made and decorated paper airplanes and practiced throwing them. They experimented by folding them different ways to see if they could get more flight time.

I have three boys and four girls. I was pretty confident the boys would love this activity but was a bit skeptical about the girls liking the activity. I didn’t need to worry, they really enjoyed it!
