Hello, there! My name is Kaycee Hobbs and I am a homeschooling mom of seven children. We love to use unit studies to make memories as a family while we are learning. Easter is coming soon and I find this is the perfect opportunity to share the plan of salvation with our children.

The Tomb is Empty Unit Study will teach the child about the resurrection of Jesus. In this homeschool lesson, the child will learn that Jesus rose again on the third day and the people found the tomb empty. It includes games and interactive activities to help them remember what they have learned.

What is a Unit Study?

A unit study is a homeschool curriculum lesson plan that is topic driven. You take one topic and explore all the sub-topics that go with it. It allows the children to learn based on their learning styles and interests.

Unit studies allow me to teach all my children at the same time, saving time in our homeschool day. We can teach differents ages and grades the same content but structure the activities to their developmental level. Everyone gets to participate in the activities but expectations are based upon their skill level.

What subjects does this unit study cover?

The Empty Tomb Unit Study covers the following subjects:

• Reading
• Bible
• Handwriting
• Vocabulary
• PE
• Culinary Arts

Reading

The students will read the story of the resurrection in the book of Matthew. Once they have read it, they are encouraged to discuss it with their leader.

This entire unit study is based on the resurrection of Jesus on the third day. We are focusing on the account given in the book of Matthew, chapter twenty-eight.

Handwriting

The children are given a handwriting assignment to write the definition of the word empty. There is a place for them to do this on the unit study or if you have multiple children, you can have them write it on a separate piece of lined paper.

Vocabulary

In this lesson plan, they will learn what the word empty means and then get to do an activity that will emphasize the meaning of the word. I like to have a child act out the vocabulary word so they will be more likely to remember it.

PE

Kids need to move around and get those wiggles out! They get to build a four-stage obstacle course and complete it while holding onto some plastic Easter eggs. The goal of this exercise is for them to memorize their memory verse, Matthew 28:6.

Culinary Arts

Food always gets the kid’s attention. They will get to make resurrection rolls where the marshmallow disappears! When they eat their resurrection roll, it will be empty inside just like the tomb.

What is this unit study going to teach my child?

The foundational principles for this study are the following:

• Jesus conquered death when he arose on the third day
• The tomb was empty
• Memorize Matthew 28:6

If you did our Easter Egg Unit Study, you learned that Jesus died on the cross for our sin. He paid the ultimate penalty so that we may have eternal life. In this study, we are focusing on the fact that He arose on the third day and conquered death. By conquering death, He conquered our sins. We have hope because He is alive! We serve a Risen Savior who cares and loves us so much!

The significance of the meaning of the word empty is what this study is based on. I want the kids to understand that Jesus died, was placed in the tomb, but still rose again. The EMPTY tomb proves that!

Unit Study Supply List:

The following recipe will serve 8 children:

• 1 can of crescent rolls
• 8 Large Marshmallows
• 1 stick of butter
• 2 tablespoons cinnamon
• 2 tablespoons white sugar
• Small piece of Aluminum Foil (per child)

Teacher or Parent Directions

This unit study is designed to lead the group in hands-on activities, discussions, and other learning. As the activity presents itself, have the child stop and complete it.

Empty Easter Egg Hunt

The students will hunt for an empty plastic Easter egg to symbolize the empty tomb. Before the lesson, fill the eggs with random items. Leave one empty egg for every child who is playing. When they find the empty egg, they will bring it to you for a small prize.

Memory Verse Obstacle Course

The students can help you prepare for this activity by stuffing the eggs with the verse cards and building their own obstacle course. They will need to build an obstacle course with four stages. At the end of each stage, they need to pick up an egg. The challenge is holding all your eggs while you are running the course. Once they have completed the course, they need to put their memory verse in order. “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” Matthew 28:6

Resurrection Rolls

Have the students follow the directions and prepare their own rolls. Give them each a small piece of aluminum foil to put their rolls on to bake.

Empty Easter Egg Hunt

Game Directions:

Your leader has hidden Easter eggs for an Easter egg hunt. However, this hunt is a little bit different. Instead of looking for Easter eggs with prizes in them, you are looking for the Easter egg that is empty! Just like the tomb on that third day. When you find the empty egg, bring it to your leader for a special prize.

Memory Verse Obstacle Course

Game Directions:

1. Get four plastic Easter eggs for every person playing.
2. The memory verse is divided into four parts and printed on cards. Cut it out.
3. Place each part of the memory verse into a plastic Easter egg.
4. Create an obstacle course with four different stages. At the end of each stage, place an Easter egg.
5. The goal is to run the obstacle course and after completing each stage, you must grab the Easter egg and carry them with you through the obstacle course.
6. At the end of the course, open the eggs and put the memory verse in the correct order. “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” Matthew 28:6
7. Say your memory verse to your leader.

Game Variation Ideas:

• Time yourself and try to beat your own time.
• Make it a race!
• Make it a rule that if you drop your egg you have to start all over again.

Culinary Arts

Resurrection Rolls

Activity Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. Melt one stick of butter.
3. Mix 2 tablespoons of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of white sugar.
4. Unroll the crescent rolls and lay in a flat triangle.
5. Give each child a piece of aluminum foil, a crescent roll, and a large marshmallow.
6. Dip the marshmallow in butter and roll into the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
7. Roll the marshmallow into the crescent roll and place it on a baking sheet.
8. Bake for 15 minutes.
9. Let them cool before eating. Enjoy!
