I don’t know about you all but The Hobbs Crew has been having some issues focusing to get their jobs, chores, and schoolwork done. This has been quite frustrating to Mama and it took me a little bit to really determine the root of the problem, the lack of focus. Once I realized this, my wheels started turning about how I could teach and demonstrate this concept to my children.

I have a method for dealing with unpleasant behaviors and character deficiencies in our kiddos. First, I determine the root of the problem, not just the symptom. In this case, we were seeing a lot of bickering between siblings, jobs done halfway (we affectionally call those “Halfie Hobbs Jobs”) and dawdling so I determined we needed a lesson on focus.

Secondly, I teach a lesson on the character trait. I define the character trait, so they understand what it means and what is expected of them. I post it in our kitchen, so they see it on a daily basis. I do some sort of activity or demonstration so the child can see the trait in action.  

Lastly, I apply it to everyday life by mentioning the trait when they are missing the mark. This helps their internal GPS recalculate and then they can choose a different route. It takes the emotion and frustration out of it for me as I gently remind them about the lesson we learned, and the child is taken back to the memory of our lesson.

This is what I call training a child. It’s all about giving them the tools to make the right choices and then be successful in executing those choices. I have used this method for years and we still recall lessons from way back when. This method has allowed me to create memories with my children and when it comes to character development, what more can I ask for?

It’s not always about what you do but how you do it. So what exactly does that mean? Let’s say I had two things on my to do list: baking cookies with my kiddos and mopping my kitchen floor. Which one should I do first? If I mopped the kitchen floor first then it would be like I never mopped my floor because my kiddos are not clean bakers. If I baked the cookies and then mopped the floor it would be much more efficient and I wouldn’t be wasting my time and energy.
