It was our first day of school and my day started at 6:52 that morning. I had a blog post going out that day so I needed to put the finishing touches on it. By 7:15 I was putting our lunch in the crockpot. We go to church on Wednesday nights and so we planned to visit the library on our way in. Since we would be brown-bagging our dinner, I made my “One Pot Chicken and Potatoes” for lunch. Well, I thought it was potatoes but I realized later that I had forgotten to put in the potatoes.

While the kiddos were waking up, Sam and I hit the treadmill for our 30-minute workout. By 8:00 the kiddos were up, eating breakfast and doing their chores. While they were eating their breakfast, I snuck off to take a quick shower.

Around 9:00 Sam rounded everyone up for PE. He took them outside and they created an obstacle course. He had each of the kiddos create a level in the obstacle course and they ran through it. While they are outside, I was using my time inside to finish up my chores and eat my breakfast.

They cleaned up outside and came in for their individual bible time. They read a devotion and then wrote 2 sentences about what they had learned. I usually try to have a small discussion with each kiddo at the conclusion of their devotion.

This was our first official day of school! Our kiddos are typical homeschool kiddos and have to stop and think about what grade they are in. Sam is in 10th grade, Bella is in 5th grade, Andy and Alex are grade twins and are in 4th grade, Randa is in 3rd grade, and it was Nikki’s first official day of kindergarten.

Next up was Latin. Yes, I’m teaching Latin and learning it myself. I chose Latin because I felt it would versatile for all our kiddos. Andy is very talented when it comes to languages and I think this will be a good foundation for whatever foreign languages he wants to learn.

After Latin, we started our Airplane Unit Study. I wrote this unit study at the last minute because the kiddos had the opportunity to ride in a plane this week! We started off with the Wright Brothers and the basics of how airplanes fly.

At this point, I realized I had forgotten to add the potatoes so I recalculated and added rice directly to the crockpot. While the kiddos cleaned up the school mess, I made a quick salad and dished up dinner. 

After lunch, we had a little bit of quiet time before we got ready to go. Sam worked on his Physical Science while our other kiddos watched a DVD or read in their rooms.

When we are getting ready to go somewhere and I need the kiddos to complete a series of tasks, I write a “to do list” on the dry erase board in our kitchen. This way they can follow step by step instructions without asking me a million questions and everyone is aware of what they need to do and pack.

We went to the library and two of our kiddos found books about airplanes. It always excites me when they check out books to learn more about something we are talking about! Sam also checked out a new backpack titled “Field Day” for his PE class this week.

Overall, it was a great day but I was ready for bed!
