4 Reasons Why We Chose Camp Chef Over Blackstone

by | Food, Home Management

We are a large family with seven kids, four girls, and three boys. Since we have a lot of mouths to feed, we were looking for another way to cook larger quantities of food at one time, especially with three growing boys. Currently, we would use our 8-quart Instant Pot, 8-quart crockpot, electric griddle, pots, and pans. All of which takes time and with certain foods the family must eat in shifts.

So, we decided to look at two brands or flat top griddles, Camp Chef and Blackstone. This is the four criteria that we looked at:

  • Portability
  • Versatility
  • Price
  • Ease of Clean Up

Portability

We are a large family who loves to travel in our RV. One of our wants was to have an outdoor cookstove that we would be able to transport easily. The Camp Chef PRO 90X folds down completely into a compact package that can be stowed away or carried wherever we want to go. The Blackstone 36-in cooking station can be taken down for transport but not as easily.

The Camp Chef PRO 90X weighs 59.5 pounds while the Blackstone 36-inch cooking station weighs 120 pounds. The Camp Chef PRO 90X has two shelves on the side that fold down easily. The legs fold into the unit easily by pushing in a pin. You can level the unit using the built-in leg levelers. It has a handle so you can carry it where you want to go without much issue.

Imagine the options with this! You could take it tailgating, or to the park for a quick cook while the kiddos played. We want to take our stove camping and we have one reason… To smell bacon in the morning and there be enough for everyone to enjoy. Trust me, sharing bacon is not an easy thing to do!

Size

Even though we are looking for portability, we need to have a large cooking surface so we can cook more food at one time. The size of this stove allows us to have a 24-inch griddle or a 36-inch griddle. The meal possibilities are endless with these upgrades!

Versatility

The Camp Chef PRO 90X has three 30,000 BTU burners that offer a lot of cooking options for multiple meal possibilities. For example, Camp Chef has multiple cooking system accessories which include:

  • BBQ grill boxes
  • Flat top griddles
  • Reversible griddles
  • Pizza ovens
  • Cast Iron Skillets, Bakeware, and Dutch Ovens
  • Aluminum Pots (for boiling and frying)

Each of those accessories come in assorted sizes and/or shapes to fit your needs.

When we take our Camp Chef PRO 90X camping, we can use the 24-inch griddle to cook breakfast on and still have a burner open for a coffee pot. Or for lunch or dinner, we can use the extra burner for a pot to cook a side dish or soup/chili. If we take the griddle off, we can then use all three burners to cook something like a boil on one burner, a side dish on another, and on the other burner make a hot beverage on those cooler nights.

As a large family it will give us another tool in our arsenal to cook in a more efficient way.

Price

Did we mention we are a large family? Well, with a large family comes a lot of budget constraints so we are always on the lookout for ways to save money without sacrificing quality. However, since we wanted to be able to take this one with us anywhere, we paid a little extra for that option.

Instead of spending money on a stationary option that we would keep on our back deck and then spending even more money for something we could travel with, we chose to get more bang for our buck and buy the Camp Chef PRO 90X.

Ease of Clean-Up

Clean up on the Camp Chef PRO 90X and griddle is quite easy. After cooking on the flat top griddle, turn off all burners. While the griddle is still hot, I use water and a scraper to get rid of the larger food particles and stuck on residue left on the griddle. Be careful when using the water, it will create steam and could burn you. Once that is done, I use folded up paper towels, remember the griddle is still hot so be careful, and cleaned off any last particles on the griddle.

The last step for the griddle is to season it with oil, I used vegetable oil. Pour a little oil on the griddle and spread it out with a spatula first and then use a lint-free cloth, remember it still might be hot, to spread the oil out over all the exposed surfaces and then let it cool.

Once done with the griddle, I used a warm damp cloth and wiped down the shelves and windscreen on the Camp Chef PRO 90X.

Just a side note that is definitely worth mentioning… There was one day we didn’t have to run the dishwasher because we didn’t have enough dishes to make it worth it. Griddle cooking definitely saves on those dirty dishes!

What Did We Purchase?

  • Camp Chef PRO90X
  • Camp Chef Professional 16 X 24 Fry Griddle
  • Camp Chef Professional 16 X 37 Fry Griddle
  • Camp Chef Griddle Carry Bag
  • Camp Chef Professional Grease Cup
  • Camp Chef Patio Cover for 3 Burner Stoves
  • 10-Piece Stainless Steel Griddle Accessories
  • Apron

Camp Chef PRO 90X

This is the camp stove unit which features three burners that lights without needing matches or a lighter. It has two side shelves which come in handy for holding your supplies while cooking and cover the burners when folded up for transport. The folding legs have levelers built in so you can easily level it to make sure your eggs don’t run off the griddle.

Camp Chef Professional 16 X 24 Fry Griddle

We decided to start with the 24 inch griddle because we like the ideas of having one burner open for making coffee, heating syrup for pancakes, or making the tomato soup to go with those grilled cheese sandwiches.

We were able to cook twelve medium-sized pancakes on the griddle which was great but ran into some snags when we cooked some Calico Potatoes and Sausage. There was not enough cooking surface to handle the amount of food we needed to cook.

Camp Chef Professional 16 X 37 Fry Griddle

Since the 24-inch griddle was proving to be on the small side, we went ahead and purchased the larger griddle that will cover all three burners. We intend to use this one primarily at home since it will be harder to transport in our RV. However, this could change!

Camp Chef Griddle Bag

We purchased the Griddle Bag to store and transport the griddle. It is a nice well-made bag and will make transporting the griddle much easier and cleaner.

Camp Chef Professional Grease Cup

After reading reviews we decided to get the grease cup to make clean up easier. So far, it hasn’t gotten to full and is easy to clean. It fits perfectly on the Camp Chef PRO 90X and works just it supposed to, collecting grease, water, and anything else that comes down the grease drain.

Camp Chef Patio Cover for 3 Burner Stoves

We decided to get a cover to protect the Camp Chef PRO 90X while we are at home. No need to fold it up and putting it inside while we are home. We can just cover it up and leave it on the porch.

10-Piece Stainless Steel Griddle Accessories

You always must get some good accessories for all the new toys you get. We purchased this set because it had all the spatulas we needed for cooking. It also came with two different colored squirt bottles for you to put oil and water in and not get them confused.

You use the oil during cooking and seasoning the griddle, and the water during the clean-up. Trust me, having this set just made things run a lot simpler.

Apron

Every cook needs an apron! I have found wearing an apron has helped save my clothes from all those stains. Remember, you are using a lot of oil in this process and when oil hits a hot surface, it spatters everywhere.

This apron model has good coverage and was made with a hardy fabric. It has several pockets on the front. I noticed Rick putting in his apron all kinds of different gadgets including his phone.

We feel we made a great decision for our family. We have used it a few times already and look forward to using it more in the future. We can’t wait to get back on the road to try the Camp Chep PRO 90X while camping. Thanks for reading!

What other cooking equipment is on your deck? Is that a smoker in the background? I already have the PRO90X, Tahoe and a 24″ Smoke Vault. I have used the smoke vault as an outdoor oven to cook 3 pounds of bacon at a time (takes about 30 minutes).
Will any future videos show some of your children doing the actual cooking? Camp Chef makes great equipment and some dishes require more than one person to get everything properly cooked on time. Great family.
